Spirometry Testing
What is a Spirometry Test
Spirometry testing is used to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing. Spirometry may also be used periodically to check whether a treatment for a chronic lung condition is helping you breathe better.
Your provider may suggest a Spirometry test for symptoms caused by chronic lung conditions such as:
- Asthma – a long-term condition where the airways become periodically inflamed (swollen) and narrowed
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – a group of lung conditions where the airways become narrowed
- Chronic bronchitis – a serious lung disease that causes long-term inflammation in the airways.
- Cystic fibrosis – a genetic condition where the lungs and digestive system become clogged with thick, sticky mucus
- Emphysema – a type of lung disease that causes shortness of breath and breathlessness
- Pulmonary fibrosis – scarring of the lungs
If you’ve already been previously diagnosed with a chronic lung disorder, your provider may use spirometry testing periodically to check how well your medications are working and whether your breathing problems are under control.
