Spirometry Test

Spirometry Testing

Family Physicians of Spartanburg Spirometry testing services, administered by our trained Spirometry technician, are used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale. We are able to perform both an echocardiography and Spirometry test onsite at the point-of-care providing immediate results and assistance to the practitioner in diagnosing and determining breathing and chronic lung conditions.

What is a Spirometry Test

Spirometry testing is used to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing. Spirometry may also be used periodically to check whether a treatment for a chronic lung condition is helping you breathe better.

Your provider may suggest a Spirometry test for symptoms caused by chronic lung conditions such as:

  • Asthma – a long-term condition where the airways become periodically inflamed (swollen) and narrowed
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – a group of lung conditions where the airways become narrowed
  • Chronic bronchitis – a serious lung disease that causes long-term inflammation in the airways.
  • Cystic fibrosis – a genetic condition where the lungs and digestive system become clogged with thick, sticky mucus
  • Emphysema – a type of lung disease that causes shortness of breath and breathlessness
  • Pulmonary fibrosis – scarring of the lungs

If you’ve already been previously diagnosed with a chronic lung disorder, your provider may use spirometry testing periodically to check how well your medications are working and whether your breathing problems are under control.
